Lilias Buchanan presents ‘Sound and Vision’ – a six week drawing course inspired by iconic albums.
Music has deeply inspired artists through history. Kandinsky, perhaps most famously of all, put music at the heart of his painting. Basquiat listened obsessively to David Bowie’s ‘Low’ while painting in the studio; Matisse named his iconic book of prints ‘Jazz’; Freeman Vine’s hand carved guitars – part musical part sculpture. Time and time again, music gives the artist a source of inspiration, expression and relief.
In response to this, Lilias will be teaching a course of six evening art workshops. Each evening she will be pairing an iconic record, that will play throughout, with an iconic visual artist aiming to produce works inspired by both art forms.
Week 1 [18 Mar] – Aphex Twin, ‘Drukqs’ vs. Paul Klee
(Nils Frahm, ‘All Encores’ vs. Kandinsky) – lessons on the interaction of colour
Week 2 [25 Mar] – Meredith Monk, ‘Piano Songs’ vs. Jackson Pollock
(Philip Glass, ‘Glassworks’ vs. Lee Krasner)
Week 3 [1 Apr] – David Bowie, ‘Low’ vs. Basquiat
Week 4 [8 Apr] – Talk Talk, ‘Spirit of Eden’ vs. Georgia O’Keeffe
Week 5 [15 Apr] – Music Life Drawing, A live performance from a special guest
Week 6 [22 Apr] – Primal Scream, ‘Screamadelica’ vs. Matisse
Expect a combination of immersive drawing exercises including automatism and other lesson plans taught at the Bauhaus, drawing and painting from still lives, collage and colour theory workshops to draw from each week.
There will be a variety of materials provided each week depending on the class’ activities.
These evenings are here for you; for relaxation, experimentation and breaking the rules!
